Key Tips for Lighting in Children’s Rooms.

I’ve often encountered various uncertainties when it comes to choosing lighting for children’s rooms. So, I’m sharing a couple of key tips on this topic with you. It was fun for us to put them together, and I hope they’ll help you at least a little.

  • Avoid strong lighting. Gentle illumination makes every room feel warm and inviting. Soft lighting reduces the contrast between light and darkness, preventing overstimulation and providing babies’ eyes with the rest they need.
  • Steer clear of halogen bulbs. Aside from overheating, these lights often agitate babies. Instead, opt for LED lighting with “warm white” or “daylight white” as they are much gentler on the eyes. They are also more energy-efficient and save electricity.
  • Consider the baby’s viewpoint. Ceiling fixtures with varying shades may look lovely from across the room, but this effect is much less pleasant when you’re lying directly beneath them.
  • Layer your lighting. Instead of one overly bright ceiling light, use multiple different lamps to further enhance the room. Aim for at least three sources of light such as overhead lighting, discreet changing table light, and an appropriate reading lamp. This way, you’ll always have enough light where you need it.
  • Avoid floor lamps. This is especially important when a child starts crawling. Unlike them, lamps placed on dressers won’t topple over as easily. Ensure lighting is placed on a solid and stable surface, with cords safely kept away from curious hands.
  • Consider installing dimmers. Dimming the lights, where possible, is always beneficial. When regularly used as part of the bedtime routine, it can help the baby fall asleep easier and faster. A tranquil atmosphere with dimmed lighting can act as a trigger for your little dreamer, signaling that it’s time to rest.
  • Be mindful of heat. Some types of bulbs can get dangerously hot, so if you have any lamps of this type, ensure they’re placed where a curious child can’t touch or reach them. Compact CFL bulbs or LED lights are much cooler to the touch than incandescent bulbs.
  • Control natural light. Natural light is a beautiful thing, except when it gives your baby an early wake-up call. It’s best to keep the baby’s room shaded and cool.
  • Add your personal touch to the space. Expressive lamps can make a big difference in a child’s room, so swap out your standard lamp for something fun and unique. Children’s rooms are perfect for themed decor, and practical lighting can serve as appropriate decor as well.
  • Don’t forget a night light. Even the sweetest children’s rooms can look scary at night. Your child might not fear the dark, but after a few late-night stumbles, things can change, so protect your child with one or more creative night lights.
